Does the Pope writ in the woods?

Best mobility device evar! Now with secret Snuggie compartment and cup holder.

Mind if I pontifficate for minute?

On March 20, 2010, the Vatican released a letter from Joseph Alois Ratzinger that apologized for abuse on the part of “priests, brothers and nuns.”

You might know Ratzinger better by his more popular name: Pope Benedict XVI.

The letter was prompted by a report released by the Irish Child Abuse Commission 2009 that documented testimony of nearly 2,000 witnesses in over 200 Catholic-run schools from the 1930s until the 1990s.

Benedict, who became the Pope in 2005, probably never imagined that he’d be writing a letter apologizing for sexual abuse committed by members of the Catholic Church. Now some are calling on him to resign.

It turns out this wasn’t just another unpleasant duty that falls on the shoulders of the Pope. It turns out that he may have been personally involved in some of the events surrounding the sex abuse scandal.

As reported by the BBC, the Pope has been accused of “failing to act on complaints from two archbishops in the US about a priest who allegedly abused 200 deaf boys.”

Back when Benedict was still known as Cardinal Ratzinger he “allegedly failed to respond to letters about the case.” Something known as a “church trial” was halted after the priest wrote to Ratzinger complaining of “poor health.”

For more than 20 years before he was made pontiff, Joseph Ratzinger led the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith – the Vatican office with responsibility, among other issues, for response to child abuse cases.

The Pope is also against condoms in Africa, furthering a ridiculous church doctrine that could help reduce the spread of AIDS. The church preaches abstinence and fidelity yet somehow that isn’t enough:

This is the reality: a married woman living in Southern Africa is at higher risk of becoming infected with HIV than an unmarried woman. Extolling abstinence and fidelity, as the Catholic Church does, will not protect her; in all likelihood she is already monogamous. It is her husband who is likely to have HIV. Yet refusing a husband’s sexual overtures risks ostracism, violence, and destitution for herself and her children.

Source: Catholic Church condom prohibition comes face to face with reality of AIDS in Africa.

I don’t know enough to know if the Pope should resign, but I do know this: Some people in positions of trust have gotten away with sexual abuse for far too long. I would guess that only a fraction of them have ever been exposed and even less of them have ever been held accountable. This is one of the greatest travesties of justice of all-time, in my humble opinion. Not only on the part of those who committed heinous acts but also on those who knew and did nothing to stop it or even worse helped cover it up so it could continue somewhere else.

How many abuses could have easily been prevented? Only God can answer that question. The guilt is shared by far too many.

Anyone suspected of sexual abuse of a minor should be treated the same regardless of their role in any church. Period. The fact that church membership helped protect this sort of behavior is unconscionable.

Steps need to be taken to make sure this never happens again. And this time, we can’t leave it up to the Catholic Church to take care of it on their own. They have more than demonstrated than any such efforts are utterly pointless. The entire organization needs to be put on some sort of probation with forced compliance.

      1. Also, you seem to forget that I’m an atheist. In my eyes, Catholicism and Christianity are no more correct than Islam. You’ve made a logical error if you think I one is more correct than the other.

  2. Considering how ridiculous it is for anyone to think that they can forgo sex for the rest of their lives, I’m amazed that anyone can be surprised that some of them turn into sexual perverts. Then again, maybe you have to be a pervert to begin with to make such a commitment. Perhaps it’s the underlying inhumanity of “the catholic way” that they’re really avoiding having anyone look into!

    1. I agree completely. I came up with something I call “the cork is in too tight” theory to attempt to explain this phenomenon. Basically it states that if you have to give something up the chances of you overreacting in the other direction are increased. Exhibit A is the sex scandal with Catholic Priests. Exhibit B is elected representatives who are against gay rights who turn out to be closet homosexuals. I’m sure there are many more examples.

That would explain why you never have threads that paint islam in a bad light. Afraid of a fatwa?

    1. You know what? Living here in White Bread, USA, I don’t encounter a lot of Muslims. The few times I have, they seem to be pretty nice. I also think Mormons are especially nice. On the other hand, I’ve personally met a bunch of people who called themselves Christians who were mondo assholes, hypocrites and posers. (Like my boss.)

That doesn’t mean I think all Muslims are good or all Christians are bad. It only reflects those my experiences based on the individuals I’ve interacted with.

If I ever meet a Muslim who is a major douchebag, I won’t hesitate one second to try to make it into a humorous blog.

If you want a scathing indictment of Muslims on an hourly basis I’ll leave that up to you and your favorite web site. That’s not my primary focus here.

    1. I heard about that one. I think she’s certifiably nuts. I don’t understand the radical elements of Islam that say you can’t even draw a cartoon of Muhammad. And I think the thing against Salman Rushdie was also nuts.

On the other hand, you have Christians trippin’ all the time, too, trying to sniper rifle abortion doctors, blow up clinics, or even kill the occasional Sir Elton John.

      Same thing, different religion.

I’m not “afraid” of a fatwa. On the other hand, I see no reason to poke a bee’s nest with a stick, either. I’m not about to draw something involving someone’s God and poop (for example) and publish my address on the internet. I have enough problems in my life already.

On the other hand, that might be a great variant of my “I’m an abortion doctor” tshirt as a way to check out of this planet once I get sick of it. I call that approach “gutless suicide.” 🙂

    “Christians kill people.”
    “Oh yeah? Muslims kill more!”
Your point: Christians killing people is ok?

Wrong is wrong. The troubling part is you only seem to be bothered when “they” do it.

  11. The point is that you cant find anything in the NT and the teachings of Jesus that would justify murder. Now with islam and mo-bomb-ed, you can find plenty. Like for example, Mo-bomb-ed sanctioned the murder of poets that offended him. Its really funny how you rant about apples and oranges and you paint islam and Christianity with the same broad stroke when they are as fundamentally different as Capitalism and Socialism.

BTW So when will you have your first critical piece on islam? Or is a potential fatwa hanging over your head turning your spine into jelly? 🙂

  12. I’m currently considering what I should call you in the interests of furthering civil discussion. You decry others while you yourself are hate-filled and apparently completely devoid of any degree of self-control. A total lack of self-control is not exactly what I’d call a redeeming quality.

I’ve already been critical of Islam or have you not been paying attention? I know, I know. I’m wasting my time trying to explain anything to you. All you really have is your hate. Logic and reason are not your friends.

As I’ve said, I am an atheist. I think Islam is just as correct as all the rest of the world’s religions. I’ll grant you that some are wackier than others, though.

I’m of the opinion that anyone who murders a human being can’t be a Christian no matter what they call themselves.

And, again as an atheist, I really care not what is in the Bible, New Testament, or any other religious text. I believe killing is wrong, whether it is done by a Christian, a Muslim or a druid.

If a Christian murders someone and a Muslim murders someone, I’m not about to go consult the books they feel are important before making up my mind. They’re both fucked.

What you have failed to prove is that I hold Christianity and Islam to different standards. I will concede, however, that I talk about Christians more. That’s mainly because their religion is shoved down my throat way more than the other. That just might have something to do with where I live.

Lastly, even as an atheist, I do believe there can be “true” believers. There can be true “Christians” and true “Muslims.” These are people who adopt a set of rules they feel are true and live by them. Like usual, the people who bother me the most are those who say they live by a certain set of rules when they really don’t. I don’t like that sort of hypocrisy.

Actually thats your biggest problem. Maybe if you were rather versed in them, you could actually tell that the teachings of Christianity are radically different than islam. Doesnt mean you have to be religious to understand them.

“What you have failed to prove is that I hold Christianity and Islam to different standards. I will concede, however, that I talk about Christians more. Sure it is. At least you werent kidnapped and made to watch your wife get raped and then burned alive like some poor Paki Christian. As you are fond of saying “Apples and Oranges”

“Lastly, even as an atheist, I do believe there can be “true” believers. There can be true “Christians” and true “Muslims.” These are people who adopt a set of rules they feel are true and live by them.”

Like Hamas, al-Qaeda and the Taliban.

Once you actually put up a thread on it, then you will have a point. Nothing to do with hate, just pointing out your hypocrisy. Hypocrites bother me as much as it does you.

  14. I think I finally got your point.

If Christians rape and beat a 15-year-old girl for two solid hours and Muslims do something similar, the difference is that the Muslim incident is worse because you think their text told them to do it?

I think that just makes the Christians worse. They are doing it in spite of their text.

Actually, I don’t really think that. I think they are equally heinous and could give a flying shit fuck less what their religious texts have to say. I think your point is nonsense.

  15. “I think that just makes the Christians worse. They are doing it in spite of their text.”

Which doesnt make them real Christians because they dont follow their teachings. I know its hard for some people to comprehend but do try, you can do it.

  17. The NT abrogates the OT just like the Medina text abrogates the Mecca text. Of course you would understand that if you actually studied up a bit on it. Still really bewildering that you condemn Christianity because someone ignores the peace and tolerance taught in as much as you condemn islam because muslims follow the violence and intolerance in it.

  18. So if I study the Bible and the “Mecca text” all will be made clear? I mean, it’s not as if there isn’t any disagreement among all the various flavors of Christians regarding all of the various passages in the Bible, right? It’s just one big happy party of agreement. It’s all so crystal clear and as obvious as the nose on your face. snort!

I know some about the Bible and less about what Muslims believe. I only have you to tell me how wonderful one is and how shitty is the other. I don’t think our relationship is quite up to that level of trust yet. Somehow being repeatedly called “moron, idiot, coward and drone” gets in the way. 😉

Wow, you give up so easily. So I take it you still wont do a thread on something critical on islam? I cant blame you. Even the director of the movie of 2012 was scared of a fatwa. 😉
